Deputy Interior Minister Thavorn Senniam is mediating today's talks between the management and labour union of the State Railway of Thailand and has promised to end the dispute which has brought train services in the far south to a halt.

Mr Thavorn said this after arriving in Hat Yai and being briefed by representatives of the railway union.

He said he would mediate negotiations between the SRT and the union in the presence of representatives of local administration organisations.

Mr Thavorn asked both the SRT management the local and Bangkok-based labour unions to cease their  war of words though the media.

He believed the Hat Yai rail union was ready to put all trains back in service by tomorrow.

He said a press conference would be held to give information on the progress of the talks.
