The State Railway of Thailand has sacked six Hat Yai-based train staff and filed a lawsuit seeking a Central Labour Court order to fire two others workers, who are members of the rail union, and demanding 70 million baht compensation for damages from them, SRT governor Yutthaya Thapcharoen said on Wednesday.

Mr Yutthana said after consulting with Transport Minister Sohpon Zarum he signed an order to fire six Hat Yai-based train staff for leaving their duties and obstructing train operations.  Since they had committed serious offences, they were subject to the punitive action without investigation, effective retroactively from Oct 27.

The six are Thawatchai Boonwisut, Sarawut Phothongkham, Saroj Rakchan, Prachaniwat Buasri, Wiroon Sakaekhum and Nitichai Chaiyaphum.

However, the six can submit an appeal against the order in 15 days, Mr Yutthana said.

The governor said the SRT was also investigating whether four other rail staff at Hat Yai had obstructed train operations.  If found to have done so, they would be punished, he added.

Moreover, the SRT had filed a lawsuit against two staff, Pinyo Ruanphet and Banchong Boonnet, who are members of the rail union, with the Central Labour Court.  In the lawsuit, the court was asked to terminate their employment contracts and order them to pay 70 million baht compensation for damages to the SRT.

The court set Nov 26 for examination of the lawsuit, Mr Yutthana said.

For me sounds the punishment fairly. Drivers who did not run ragged locomotives have to pay 70 million baht in fines. Politicians who cheat the state on one billion. They may be 10 000 baht in fines. Let us say The Thai justice.
