The opposition Puea Thai Party has announced a national security and foreign affairs policy aimed at promoting peace and friendship with neighbouring countries.

Puea Thai chairman Chavalit Yongchaiyudh and other prominent Puea Thai figures launched the 'Peaceful Thailand, Being Friends with Neighbours' policy at a press conference on Monday.

Gen Chavalit said he will visit the violence-plagued southernmost provinces for briefing sessions with local agencies and local people, with the aim of getting them to collaborate in seeking an end to the unrest.

Solving the problems of southern unrest would not be difficult, it just needed action to ensure justice for people in the region. The problem stemmed from people's resentment of an unjust administration, Gen Chavalit said.

He said the Puea Thai Party had a plan to develop Songkhla city, in much the same way Chiang Mai city was developed in the North.

The government would then be able to pass laws allowing local people to look after themselves, but they would still be under the Thai constitution.

Gen Chavalit said he had invited 2006 coup leader Sonthi Boonyaratkalin, former Pattani senator Den Tomeena, Matubhumi Party MP Areepen Udonsin, Puea Pandin Party MP for Narathiwat province Jeaming Tohtayong and Democrat MP for Narathiwat Waemahadee Waedaoh to join him on his trip to the far South.

"I decided not to go to the South earlier because it might be seen as interfering with the government's work.

''But today I have to ask for permission to solve the problems there without discriminating against members of other parties because this is for the national interest," he said.

The former prime minister said he will also visit neighbouring countries to tighten their ties with Thailand.

Good relationship with neighbours? Oh yeah, Chavalit calls Than Schwe his brother, he is a big fan of Thein Sein, and Hun Sen is his close bosom friend! How can someone be a good example in politics who has only friends of the worst kind?
Thai People should be careful of Chavalit, he is going to lead Thailand into a big desaster.

    Good for P. Thai party.

Shows how responsible they are in opposition, and their credibility with respect to being a Government in waiting.

Being representative of the majority electorate in Thailand it is a travesty they are in Opposition. When one commands an democratic electoral majority, that should be reflected in governance.

Contrast this action to the PAD, with all their friends currently in Government and other high places. Their focus is on rampant and destructive Nationalism as evidenced by their silly posturing at the border trying to instigate a phoney crisis.

They remind me of minority, dictatorial Govts. who stay in power by fabricating external bogey-men.

"The old soldier never die" is so true. General Chavalit is bringing new Fresh Air to the nation, full of Hope and warm friendly Goodwill to neighbour countries on Equal to all.

With this goodwill, nations in the Mae Kong basin could join hands in promoting better understanding in all areas, sharing potential enormous hydro power source, reinforcing past co-existence common culture value and developing future interest, and strengthening common bonds among Southeast Asia Nations so that wall of mine, yours, and theirs will have no place. These nations have too many similarities to be separated. Past experiences had showed us WARS , not only, didn't solve any conflicts but also put hardships on people not counting all economic loss. SE Asia will be better on the basis of Equal, Understanding, and Peace approach.
