Puea Thai Party chairman Chavalit Yongchaiyudh is proposing the establishment of a special administrative area comprising the three troubled provinces of Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat.

The former prime minister said he would put forward the idea at meetings with local leaders during his trip to the far South, which begins tomorrow.

He said on Monday that he believed he would get their support.

Gen Chavalit said this was the best way he could help the government tackle the insurgency problem in the southern region.

He was proposing the three provinces form a self-administration area. As in other special administrative areas, legislation would have to be passed to enable it, he said.

Central to the idea was to give due honour and  importance to the local people, who hold to a different culture and religion from people in other regions of Tnailand, he said.

Gen Chavalit said the Puea Thai Party had invited members of other parties to join him on his trip,  including Gen Sonthi Boonyaratkalin of Matuphum, Areepen Uttarasin of the Democrats and Wae Mahadi Wae-dao of Puea Pandin, as well as Senator Den Tomeena.

Gen Chavalit and other senior members of Puea Thai this morningh launch the parties new security and  foreign affairs policy, "Peaceful Thailand, being friends with neighbours".

He said that since the Sept 19, 2006 coup the people had been split into two groups - pro-parliament and pro-dictatorship. The conflict between them had become increasingly serious.

The government should no longer pay attention to amending the constitution and instead concentrate on solving this conflict, which had also affected relations with neighbouring countries.

The Puea Thai chairman said from the middle of this month he would begin a series of overseas visits - to Malaysia, Burma, Vietnam, Laos and China - to promote bilateral relations with under the party's nw policy.

"Our policy is to bring peace to the Thai people," he said.

Gen Chavalit said that in Malaysia he would seek cooperation in agriculture and promote the Halal food industry.

He would then visit Burma before proceeding to Vietnam. He said Vo Nguyen Giap, the Vietnamese Dien Bien Phu hero who is now 90 years old, is an old  friend.

Gen Chavalit said he would then visit Laos, where he is also friends with several cabinet ministers, before ending his tour in China.

He said relations with neighbouring countries were very important and he did not understanding why the current Thai leadership had overlooked this matter.

I have never liked Curly/Chavalit and will not ever, but I have to admit that the ideas are good. Why did the present government think of that? Same comments about Thaksin.

Why not the present goverment improvise or shall I say be "creative" as it has been said many times in the last few months?

All the People who now praise Chavalit and his visits to foreign countries should think about his statement that Than Schwe is like a brother, that he is a fan of Thein Sein and an admirer of Hun Sen, three leaders among the worst nowadays in the world!
Than Schwe and his PM Thein Sein are responsible for crimes of genozide, for raping Women and children, recruiting of child soldiers, etc.
How can Chavalit call them his brothers? He must be sick and dangerous!
Thai People, do you want to live under a leadership with a member whose brother is Than Schwe? Wake up, and be careful, blind faith in your leaders or in anything will get you killed.

The death toll keeps rising with no break in sight, proving the current approach does not work. And if continuing, more damage could lead to a spreading point, even people living in metropolitan area will be impacted.

We could not solve violence with more guns and troop, history has proved that. Only Compassion could calm the situation, with empathy, heavy hearts could be persuaded to understand the other side.

General Chavalit, we hope you arm yourself with these value to bring human dignity and justice to our suffering countrymen in the south.

    General Chavalit
You are the first person of rank speaking out with a realistic plan. Look at how the Aceh problem in Indonesia was resolved. Now it is time to forget past misstakes and move in the direction of a real solution. On this suggestion the local Yawi leaders will not only listen but also be able to sell it to their peers.
You will be a true hero if you make this happen.
God will be with you on this mission.

KHUNANDRA #8: You have a really interesting way with words.

In one sentence you encapsulate the entire PAD/military diatribe.

The only thing you forgot to tag on at the end was."...on the run". You should be ashamed of yourself for not having reminded the reader of this.

The well rehearsed and repeated phrase (ad neauseum) is:

"Taksin the convicted fugitive criminal on the run...."

write that a hundred times tonight so the next time you comment you will have it at your fingertips.

    on the run
    on the run
    on the run

Don't forget next time, lest the readers themselves might forget.

The big mistake was done by Thaksin himself, when he was Prime Minister. He thought that using the big stick should bring the Muslims in line. The army massacred a lot of people. Thaksin made the situation worst. The operation "origami" paper birds to stop the violence and bring peace in the south, ridiculed a little bit more Thaksin.
The Muslims cannot forget, and it will be very difficult for them to dissociate Chavalit from Thaksin

All I hear is how this Government does nothing. Then when someone from the oposition steps up to bat, they jump on him.
Gen. go for it and best of luck, if you acomplish one good thing for the country it's more than the Gov has done.

If Gen Chevalit really want a peaceful Thailand..he must first ask the Red Shirt craps to get off the streets and to his boss the fugitive convicted criminal Thaksin to shut his mouth.

Re: Discussion #1.....here we go again.

The same old PAD diatribe....."If it is not us or our friends, it can only be someone manipulated by Thaksin"

They used that cudgel with two democratically elected Governments (Samak, Somchai)and they think they can do it again with Chavalit, the Parliamentary opposition and the Democracy movement as a whole.

And maybe they can do it again. They probably know better than anyone who their primary audience is....it certainly is not the Democratic majority Thai electorate.

Their primary audience is anti-democratic and paternalistic. They also know that here is where the real power is. And it is these people most disaffected by democracy and Thaksin electoral strength.
