Thailand second best-value destination

Thailand is the world's second best-value destination according to Lonely Planet's 'Best in Travel 2010' guide. Iceland tops the best-value list.

The renowned travel guide firm said Thailand remained "perennially good value". Thailand was one of the least expensive long-haul holidays for European tourists and there were many accommodation choices in the country.

The world's best-value destination for next year went to Iceland.

Lonely Planet said exploring ice caps and volcanoes and bathing in hot springs in Iceland would be significantly less expensive, thanks to the global economic downturn.

London, South Africa, India, Malaysia, Mexico, Bulgaria, Kenya and Las Vegas are other destinations in the most affordable list.

I agree London and Vegas are not cheap why did they put them on the list? Yes Thailand can be expensive if you hang around 5 star hotels, but if you are savvy and do the research & learn a few Thai words like "pang" you can haggle with the best of the cheap Indian tourists.

At Foodland you also can eat cheap and buy groceries & beer at a fair price.Tons of cheap garments at BoBe and Pratanam almost everything is less than in America. Someone on a western pension can do very well in Thailand.

Sure I spend as much as ten backpackers, not because I piss it away at Patpong, Nana, and Cowboy it is because I stay at 4 star hotels enjoy Steak, lobster, potatoes, and desserts. After shopping all day I love a foot massage and a couple of Heineken served with a smile and proper attitude. For everyone like me there are ten backpackers so I guess it evens out.

I agree. Thailand, is a great country full of wonderful people. I miss Thai food. Foreigners who reside in Thailand, should consider themselves lucky. If you're a foreigner residing in Thailand, I recommend you give something back to a great nation. If you have a skill, i.e., Math, Engineer, Speech, or English instructor, volunteer to teach a few classes free of charge.

Funny how the Post trumpets this "best value" rating. If you want tourism to increase, the cheap Lonely Planet reading back-packing crowd is not going to turn it around. As much as Thailand hates to admit it, the average sex tourist, errr.. I mean "mature" traveler probably spends more than ten back packers combined.

I stayed in Iceland for a ew weeks 15 years ago thanks to the USAF. S very beautiful with all those hot springs and glaciers, but to buy anything it was VERY expensive. Everything, and I mean everything had to be imported. But as far as I know the airports were never closed due to some ingrates.

As an Expat living here i do not agree..try living is central Bangkok and living like a Non Thai (many of us have no choice as expat workers).

Yes Thailand is cheap if you eat Thai food and live in Thai accommodation...outside the business or Tourist areas that is

Considering the average The monthly salary is 6-8,000 baht , as a foreigner try living on that you would be in hospital pretty soon

These surveys really make me laugh as they are not even relevant..as a Heineken in 7/11 is about 36 baht in a 5 star tourist hotel 250 baht ++
Fried rice on the street 25-35 baht in the same hotel anywhere from 195++ to 295 ++

Best value from where??? The cost of travelling to Iceland from here in Perth Australia would put it a long way behind Thailand for value for money.
Lonely Planet should specify that they mean, value from Europe. Thailand will continue to get value seeking tourists from Australia.

Ok, The world's gone potty. London and Thailand are cheap, hmmmmmmmm. I live in Thailand and can confirm you can live as a cheap Charlie but it can also cost quite a bit to live and eat and drink as a farang. As for London, teh LP must be being paid. Expensive! if you don't think so, go!!
