State authorities will ensure the safety of Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva when he attends a meeting of members of the Thai Chambers of Commerce nationwide in Chiang Mai on Nov 29, provincial governor Amornphan Nimanand said on Wednesday.

“The red-shirt anti-government group in Chiang Mai has now turned to nonviolent demonstrations to avoid giving the city a bad image,'' Mr Amornphan said.

The TCC meeting was an important gathering aimed aimed at rehabilitating the economy and solving economic problems, and there should be no incidents that could make things worse, he said.

The governor gave an assurance he would do his best to ensure peace and order during the meeting.
