Thaksin made Cambodian adviser

Cambodia said Wednesday it had appointed fugitive former Thai prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra economic adviser to premier Hun Sen in a move that adds to tensions between the countries.

Cambodia has appointed former Thai prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, seen here in 2008, as economic adviser to premier Hun Sen and his administration.

The appointment was announced on state television almost two weeks after Hun Sen first riled Thailand by offering safe haven to Thaksin, who was ousted in a coup in 2006 and is living abroad to avoid a jail term for corruption.

"Thaksin has already been appointed by royal decree... as personal adviser to Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen and the adviser to the Cambodian government in charge of economy," said a government statement read on television.

"Allowing Thaksin to stay in Cambodia is virtuous behaviour...good friends need to help each other in difficult circumstances," it added.

The statement went on to call charges against Thaksin "politically motivated" and vowed not to extradite him if he "decides to stay in Cambodia or travels in and out of Cambodia in order to fulfill his duties".

Ties between Cambodia and Thailand have been difficult since June 2008 amid an ongoing border conflict over land surrounding an 11th century temple, which has claimed several lives.

Hun Sen stoked up tensions with Thailand in late October when he first offered Thaksin refuge in Cambodia and then marred a summit of Asian leaders by saying he had offered him the job as economic adviser.

Thailand said that the appointment was an internal matter for Hun Sen's government but it would push for the extradition of billionaire Thaksin if he sets foot in Cambodia.

"It's a Cambodian matter," Thai Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban told AFP. "We don't have to analyse anything, the appointment is a private relationship between Cambodia and Thaksin. It hasn't had any impact on us."

"It's not a surprise. Cambodia has previously hired other foreigners as advisers and it did not cause us any problems. We don't have to worry too much," added Suthep, who is in charge of national security.

"But if Thaksin happens to be in Cambodia then we have to ask for his extradition."

Thaksin remains an influential figure on Thailand's turbulent political scene, stirring up mass protests from abroad against the government of Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva.

The Thai government announced last month that it would strip Thaksin of his royal awards and his official rank from his time in the police force.

Twice-elected Thaksin fled Thailand last year before he was sentenced to two years in jail in a corruption case. His allies were driven from government in December after anti-Thaksin protesters occupied Bangkok's airports.

Abhisit has said Thaksin, who has several passports and divides his time between a number of countries, must return to Thailand to face justice.

Since Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva has, i observe, power in the government, the relationship and peace with the neighbor country, Cambodia are deteriorated and decayed. PM Hun Sen do like this, it just uplift the PEACE.

Furthermore, I think PM Hun Sen is not against to the people, politic, economy, and internal affair of Thailand, but PM Hun Sen is against to the idea of abuse.

Well done Mr. Hun Sen! Even Mr. Thaksin can move toward Cambodia economy but Thaksin could bring more investor to Cambodia. By the way, if Thai did not delay the board conflict, this thing would not happen.
As I knew most thai people love Thaksin. I can draw that Thaksin is not bad at all.

It should worry the Thai public that Thaksin is Cambodia's economic adviser as Thaksin has seen sensitive and secret information while serving as Thailand's Prime Minister.

Irregardless of whether Taksin accepts this position or not this shows a total lake of respect for Thailand, Thai citizens and the Thai government.

The Thai government must take strong action against Thailand in order to show strength and leadership. They cannot sit idly by and watch Cambodian leaders make a mockery of Thai judicial system.

Any Thai who sees this possible appointment as acceptable is a daft as they come and they must be receiving money from Taksin for their support.

Some people can't seem to see what's behind this appointment. Hun Sen doesn't need Thaksin as an adviser. This appointment won't affect any of Cambodia's economic performance. It's pure political move. Hun Sen uses Thaksin as a bargaining chip in order to quicken the border negotiation. Hun Sen also wants to embarrass Thai's PM, and he wants to use red shirt people in the border as human shield to protect Cambodian against PAD protesters.

What I can tell is that Hun Sen is not very stupid when he picks foreign adviser. The current South Korean president used to be his long term economic adviser, and Cambodia only sees more aid when his adviser become PM of a country.

Treason? As far as I know, a person is free to advise whomever he choose since both countries arent at war (for the moment being).

But I'm curious how long this cosy relationship will stand ? And where does he hold his "expertise"? Its not because one is a (good) businessman that one is also an expert in economics. T was just good in filling his own pockets (and from his friends). I m not sure Hun Sen will still smile if his (?) country hits rock bottom due to the "advice" of T.
