Thaksin job is 'consolation' gift

  • Online news:

The job of economic adviser to the Cambodian government is no more than a consolation gift for former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra from a friend, Prime Minister Hun Sen, the Democrat Party leader's spokesman, Thepthai Senpong, said on Thursday.

Mr Thepthai said did not think Thaksin would actually do anything.

It ws an internal matter for the  Camdoian government and the Thai government would not try to interfere.

However, if Thaksin happened to  stay in Cambodia, the government would have to seek his extradition, he said.

Interior Minister and Bhumjaithai Party leader Chavarat Charnveerakul said Thaksin's appointment would be unlikely affect the Thai economy.

"Even if he were not economic adviser to the Cambodian government, he would still try to get closer to Thailand," Mr Chavarat said.

Finance Minister Korn Chatikavanij said he was more worried what damage Thaksin would do to the Cambodian economy.

Mr Thepthai also said Puea Thai Party chairman Chavalit Yongchaiyudh's talk of setting up "Pattani City" and giving southern insurgents an amnesty was intended only for Puea Thai's use in election campaigns in the three southern border provinces.

@Tony: The same character mechanism that has driven Thaksin to the level of financial and political success he had attained is the same mechanism that has no "off" switch and only a shrewd consideration of ethics and morality.

He simply has goals and an intense urgency which forces him to do anything to achieve those goals. Therefore, it is inevitable that at some point his momentum will be disrupted by an opposing force (one of his own making). Ultimately, if this is incompetence, then I agree with you.

Both the last paragraph and last sentence of your post is absolutely on the money.

    @ Tony (#2)

"developed infrastructure, and an abundance of natural resources"

Looked at the map lately? See many rail links, do you? IT years behind other countries - snail-speed broadband, 3G non-existent and no sign of it coming etc etc. At least you refer to Thai education standards - which are beyond a joke and also very much a key part of a nation's infrastructure.

Outside of agriculture (which features one of the lowest rice-growing productivity performances around) - just which "natural resources" does Thailand have in "abundance"? Nice scenery?

With regard to "Thaksin's squandered 6 years in office", are you familiar with Thailands's GDP growth in that period as well as before/after it? Evidently not - but don't let the facts get in the way of your agenda-driven rant and fantasy.

Yes I doubt Thaksin will do anything in his new post also. Not because its symbolic or for propaganda purposes - but because he is completely incompetent.

Thailand has been for the last 20 years in a position to follow South Korea, Singapore, and Japan in ascension as a major regional economic power. 60+ million people, developed infrastructure, and an abundance of natural resources, there is no reason why Thailand couldn't eclipse any of its Asian neighbors besides China.

Poor education and corrupt politicians, including Thaksin's squandered 6 years in office are the reason why Thailand still lags.
