Soaring public support for government

Public support for the government has soared recently, according to the results of an Abac Poll released on Friday.

The poll was conducted  between Oct 25 and Nov 5, and involved 3,709 people, aged 18 and up, in 21 provinces.

A similar poll in  September found the Abhisit Vejjajiva government  had only 23.3 per cent popular support; the latest poll showed support had almost tripled to 68.6 per cent.

By region, support for the government was 88.2 per cent in the South, 68.9 per cent in the Central, 68.8 per cent in Bangkok, 64.6 per cent in the North, and 53.1 per cent in the Northeast.

Abac Pol director Noppadol Kannikar  said the increase in support for the government was obviously a reaction to Cambodian Prime Minister Hun's attack on the Thai judicial system and the appointment of Thaksin Shinawatra as his adviser.

He said the poll results showed the majority of Thai people still had confidence in the judicial system and that the latest political conflict between Thailand and Cambodia had brought people together in support for the government.

This poll was a push poll. The questions were weighted for the response that was given and does not reflect the ongoing views of the population.

If Cambodia-bashing is the means for the government to garner Thai support, then this is very wrong.

Nothing can justify impetuous and hot-headed decisions. We are not playing a computer game that we can re-start and reset it when we made the wrong move!

Hot-headed actions are for brawling kids and fist fights.

taksin is not stupid, he's very clever. it's too bad he uses his brilliance to serve his own interest. he could have been a stateman but end up worse than a common criminal - a traiter who will do anything to get his way.

The ABAC poll itself is a joke.
Have you noticed that the poll always favor the government?

After 911, support amongst Americans for President Bush rose from 45% to 90% and stayed there for years.

Did anyone really expect that an escalating problem with Cambodia further provoked by Hun Sen would produce anything other than the above results?

Hun Sen is loathed by every public official outside of Cambodia, he doesn't travel abroad because he is a blight and no one wants him around.

    Why?

Because Hun Sen is an evil tyrant and no decent self-respecting human being would associate or in any way support that vile villain.

For the those on here who were lauding the Hun Sen-Thaksin relationship (who now have egg on their face) the last thing on earth they wanted to happen is happening: the PM and the government are riding high on the rising tide of Thai nationalism and will surely milk this for all it's worth. And why not?

I am not excited about this article like some posters are. 3,709 people is what like 0.00000001% of the population in Thailand! LOL!!!!

Discussion 2: You need to stop laughing because in my opinion, you made two big mistakes. First of all, Former PM Thaksin is far from being stupid. Secondly, those who laugh at others, are normally, the ones who lack an education and also, lack level-headed, understanding. In fact, I would consider former PM Thaksin, to be brilliant. Yes, PM Abhisit, has proven his leadership ability. I commend him for standing up to the Labour Union and for several positive, things he's done for Thailand. Never call a person stupid. A man by the name of Albert Einstein, was often called stupid, but it turned out he was the most-intelligent man on earth.

Regardless if you are a follower of Hun Sen and/or Thaksin, I believe they have both made a grave tactical error. If you see a Family arguing and try to intervene, the whole Family is likely to turn on you - that is human nature and this is what has happened here. Thailand, as a whole has railed against Hun Sen and I suspect others will be disillusioned that Thaksin has jumped on the bandwagon for his own personal gain.
