Thai-Cambodian border remains 'calm'

The situation along the Thai-Cambodian border remains normal and there is no sign that Cambodian troops are being reinforced, 2nd Army commander Lt-Gen Weewalit Chornsamrit said on Friday.

Relations between local people in border villages of the two countries were unchanged.

He said he had personally tried to create a good understanding with the local people and had advised them not to  panic every time tensions rise between the two goverments. Both governments preferred  peaceful solutions.

Lt-Gen Weewalit said that there is still no plan to close the border. The army commander-in-chief chief had ordered his troops to maintain good relations with Cambodia.

The latest dispute between Thailand and Cambodia centres on Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen's appoointment of ousted Thai premier Thaksin Shinawatra as an economic adviser and his announcement the fugitive politician's conviction by  the Thai Supreme Court was "politically motivated" and that he would not permit his ''close friend'' to be extradited.

Thailand on Thursday recalled its ambassador to Phnom Penh, prompting a similar move by Cambodia.in a retaliation.
