PM: Chavalit worsens the situation

Good relations between Thailand and Cambodia turned sour after Gen Chavalit Yongchaiyudh, chairman of Puea Thai Party, made a visit to the neighbouring country, the Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva said on Saturday.

Regarding the remark by ousted prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra in his open letter issued on Friday that the government was using internal political conflict to pressure Cambodia, Mr Abhisit said the problem was not caused by his government.

It was because the Cambodian government issued a statement appointing Thaksin as an economic advisor, he said.

“Thakin is a Thai citizen. He should realize that what he had done is damaging the country’, Mr Abhisit said.

He insisted that the diplomatic retaliation against Cambodia is not too harsh.

Isaan Farang discussion 19, get your facts right. The Thai economy only produces 143 billion according to the World Bank statistics for nominal GDP in 2008. Even if you use the Purchsing Parity statistics then you will not get a number as high as what you quoted and purchasing power statistics is done in International dollars, which is a fictional currency with a hypothetical value that is equal to approximately 10 baht or $0.30, so you cant use that as a quoted statistic.

On the other hand it is true that Cambodias GDP is low, about 4.5 - 5 billion, but with a little investment you would be amazed how quickly that can turn around. All Thaksin has to do is open the doors to foreign investment, create laws that give some kind of assurance that companies will not have their assets taken away and then advertise this to the countries of the world and they will get the investment they need. The US for example invests 1.2 Trillion dollars a month internationally, so can you imagine what would happen if they started seriously investing in Cambodia. Don't ever say it is not possible for this to happen, because I do business in Thailand and for the most part there are some significant barriers of entry in business. It definately does not catter to small business investment.

So, Cambodia can pass Thailand up, but it will take some new laws there, enforecement of existing laws and some additional assurances that will bring insurance rates on foreign investments down and make Cambodia a more attractive choice for investment.

Abhisit fights the fight .He s here now doing what he can .Thaksin can come back any time he wants to .Nobody told him to leave the country or stay away .Unbelievable how some people no matter what Thaksin does still believe hes such a hero .Heroes dont run from the fight and get booted out of other countries they try to hide in .They dont employ the poor to fight their fight for them .They dont insight violence while they evacutate their own families out of the country .The only sad people who would want this guy as a PM are the people who dont care how much he steals as long as they get a share .Who cares if the country is run like a gang of thugs .Do you honestly believe that is the best Thailand has offer .What a low opinion you must have of your country .

Discussion 9: it is clear that you are a supporter of the ex khmer rouge officer Hun Sen,who now turns his attention to presiding over one of the most corrupt and un democratic regimes in Asia. Also ASEAN has no image to destroy it is full of people like Hun Sen ,the Laos dictators, the Vietnamese dictators and the Burmese dictators. The rest of the democratic world laughs at ASEAN.

Discussion 10:It is ridiculous to think that the Cambodian economy, which is more firmly under the control of Hun Sen and his corrupt cronies, than the Thai economy was under the control of Thaksin and his corrupt cronies is anywhere close to being compared to the Thai economy.GDP figues for 2008 are Cambodia 27.95 billion or $2000 per head and Thailand 553.4 billion at $8500 per head.Get your facts right, although not many supporters of the "dear leader" bother with detail.

Another "smart" move from the leader of the Puea Thai/red shirt zombies who are always telling us how "smart" their leader is.

i am not intending to interfere the thai internal affairs, but i think sincerely that all thais and not a small group of so-called elites should be given back their right to choose their leader.

blaming others and refusing to propose/accept a proper solution but just clinching on to power and claiming that this is the only option is not a real solution for the country. and all thais be reassured that this is a universal principle.

This is great entertainment for me. A bunch of idiots fighting again over who gets to profit from all the corruption. It is like taking a boat ride to monkey island and watching the monkeys fight over who is going to steal your gold watch.

If you are a Thai and find my post to be utterly offensive. Then do something to prove me wrong.
Vote the A-holes out of office and elect someone who will clean it all up, that means the descrimination too. Descrimination is at the heart of all of this.

It is interesting to note from the puppet PM that a Thailand citizen is note allowed to work for Cambodian government. It is no surprise that Abishit blamed on other for the problem that he has created with the support of PAD last year. As the dust of 2006 coup began to settle, people are beginning to realize the relationship that democrats has with the military, PAD and some powerful elites who were glowingly afraid of the popularity of TRT's people representatives. They are many things that continue to be suppressed by the democrats from the knowledge of the Thai people.

I agree with some of the previous comments but I think they are a bit narrow minded.
There are many Thais working abroad who have their own business or are working in executive positions with international companies
I am sure that these people do not have a two year sentence hanging over their head or are not waiting for scores of corruption charges to be heard in court.
I am sure that these people can return to Thailand any time without having to look over their shoulder all day.
