Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva should think carefully about the plan to revoke a memorandum of understanding on overlapping maritime boundaries in the Gulf of Thailand signed with Cambodia in 2001, ex-premier Somchai Wongsawat said on Saturday.

"The MOU revocation would damage the country and causes difficulties to Thai people”, Mr Somchai, a brother-in-law of ousted prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra said.

Asked about Thaksin’s appointment as an economic advisor to the Cambodian government and personal advisor to Hun Sen, Mr Somchai said the appointment has not caused any damage to Thailand.

“It is an honour for Thaksin as he is accept by a foreign country. The government should not let personal feelings decide its foreign relation policy”, said Mr Somchai.

Foreign Affairs Minister Kasit Piromya had said on early this week said he would propose the MOU revocation plan to the cabinet meeting on upcoming Tuesday for approval.

Many country's head of state are frequently appointed by other countries as advisors. This is an honour for the country's people to be so recognised by another country.

The difference in Thailand's case is the current government is all out to get Thaksin and anything to do with him has to be destroyed.

Thailand exports 25 times more to Cambodia than Cambodia exports to Thailand. This is going to hurt The Thai economy as Cambodia can look for markets in Vietnam etc.

This whole thing is another knee jerk reaction to anything Thaksin does or says, unfortunately knee jerking is all the Democrats do well.

Nok, I'm curious... why said Thaksin help Cambodia to destroy Thai? If I'm not mistaken, his title is Hun Sen's advisor of economic, not Hun Sen's advisor of destroying Thailand....LOL...

I think his job is about advising of how to gain more money right? really curious...LOL

It is incredible (or unfortunate)that some people who write comments cannot understand hoe poll are done. In France there are more than 30M voters.. to predict the results of an election, only about 200 people in every margin area are interviewed and with that..they give the results of the election within 5 minutes after the counting of the votes starts (they call it (La Fourchette). In Australia to predict the victory of Rudd, only 16 marginal polling areas were surveyed. For me 3000 people is a very good sample to give an opinion. Couple weeks ago when the poll gave Thaksin an advance on Abhisit, Nappadon mentioned the results of the poll. Whatever is good for the fugitive should be good for Abhisit as well.

Bravo Abhisit... your popularity increase 3 times...
This is just a short time only. If you take into consideration for medium time and long time, your popularity will goes down more than 3 times. Believe me, trade between Thai-Cambodia is not fair. Thai export more than Cambodian's export about 10 times. If Thai close border with Cambodia the loser is Thai and the other countries will jump to replace the Thai position nowadays, such as Vietnam, China, Malaysia, ...

Look at the other countries around Thailand, Thai seem to make trouble with many countries around her, such as Cambodia for this movement, Myanmar, Malaysia, Singapore (Tamasek, Loas, and Indenesia, ... What is the Thai position in Asean?

Re-consider your action, Mr Abhisit. first you recalled your ambassador, then you revoked the MoU. then what next? close the boarder trade? it won't effect too much harm for Khmer side. in the mean time, Vietnam, China and Korea will be very happy as they take Thais' place in Cambodia market. and don't forget what happened, when Khmer burnt Thais ambassy to Phnom Penh? no more Thais film nor movie. Trust me, you can do better than that.

Why does it project to me that the Thai side is so afraid of Thaksin being the advisor to Cambodia? Are they afraid that Thaksin will succeed in helping Cambodia to be more economically successful that Thailand? Is it because they hate Thaksin or they are just uncomfortable at the prospect of a neighbouring country growing stronger than them? It just makes me think.
