PM calls on Thais to protect honour

The Thai-Cambodian diplomatic dispute turned sour after opposition Puea Thai Party chairman Chavalit Yongchaiyudh met Cambodia's Prime Minister Hun Sen in Phnom Penh last month, according to Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva.

Mr Abhisit arrived in Bangkok on Sunday morning after attending the first ever Japan-Mekong Summit in Tokyo.

He said in his weekly broadcast that the ties between the two countries had worsened because of former prime minister Chavalit's trip to Phnom Penh and the appointment of deposed premier Thaksin Shinawatra as Prime Minister Hun Sen's personal advisor.

"There have been criticisms over Thai politics and justice system. Thai people cannot accept this and we must protect our country's justice institution," Prime Minister Abhisit said.

However, Mr Abhisit said, the Cambodian government could be misinformed because the rulings in many cases had been in line with the law and facts.

Even Thaksin used the Thai legal system to take legal action against others, he said.

Appointing Thaksin as Cambodia's economic advisor would directly affect some of the bilateral agreements as they were made when he was prime minister.

Since Thaksin became an advisor to another side, it was necessary for the government to downgrade its diplomatic relations with the neighbouring country by recalling the Thai ambassador to Phnom Penh back, Mr Abhisit said.

"This is considered normal, as we have to protect Thai people's honour. But we have to be prudent and cautious at the same time," he said.

He said the government had to be careful to prevent conflicts between Thai and Cambodian people along the border areas. The problems between both countries must be addressed through peaceful means.

"There is no reason to resort to violence, and trading between the two countries are still normal," he said.

The government had to assure the safety of Thai people in Cambodia after the Thai ambassador to Phnom Penh was recalled back last week.

"Thai people who want to play gambling in the neighbouring country should wait until the situation is restored."

He insisted the negotiation frameworks with other neighbouring countries must not be halted.

The Japan-Mekong Summit resolved that all countries must respect each other while promoting good relations and sincerity. The government had to make sure that problems would not arise from the Thai-Cambodian dispute during the upcoming US-Asean Summit.

"I urge Thai people to show their stance by being good neighbours and sincere. I do not want Thailand to be at a disadvantage or discredited, and we have to join hands to protect the country's benefits," the premier said.

"Prime Minister Hun Sen always said that we should look at the future. But he usually raised the issues relating to Thaksin when he earlier said he will not allow friendship to be more important than the Thai-Cambodian ties," Mr Abhisit said. "The foreign policy must show mutual sincerity and respect."

Dear RAY: What planet do you live on?

You are absolutely right the PAD have a lot of clout but it has nothing to do with having the backing of more than a handful of people, mainly in BKK.

Unions are pretty much led by the nose by their leaders, but from what I understand the PAD have union support in a few pockets, and not the whole country.

    - "the people backed it. The coup was met with people bearing flowers. The UDD was greeted by bricks and fists."

The major part of the population absolutely did not support the coup. If the coup was supported why did the military feel obliged to send the troops and tanks in the street.

Yes I remember well, some Bangkokians were giving flowers. Mainly the wealthy of small to medium business people for whom the coup was largely carried out.

And you no idea what you are saying when you write "The UDD was greeted by bricks and fists."

That is the whole point. The poor and near poor are met by bricks, fists and a determined military. The PAD get away with it all because the military overtly back them.

PAD is a joke?, but when they come out for some reason they always get what they set out for. No one besides a few hired thugs in Red contest them, they have the support of the unions and Thais from North to South.

So you can pine all you want about the airports and the coup, but the people backed it. The coup was met with people bearing flowers. The UDD was greeted by bricks and fists.

And now with Hun Sen talking down to Thailand on Thaksin's behalf, PAD's going to be more popular than ever.

Already during three years I hear every day on all news channels with an interval of five minutes in between: 'Thaksin Shinawat RattamundrĂ' and I get really bored.
Are there no other important issues in Thailand anymore ?. In case you think that Thaksin is a criminal (I do not), let the court and the police handle the case. In case you think that he was bad for the country (I do not) you must be enjoying the fact that he now gives his bad advises to Cambodja, the neighbour country that you even envy some stairs of a typical Cambodjan temple. Thailand neglects the decision of the international court for many years, while in Thailand criticising the court is against the law ! Thai are truly hysterical about being criticised themselves but they critisize everybody else.
Mr Abbysith, please stop the whole Thaksin subject and finally begin with doing the things that are important for this country. If you do not know what things: call me and I will refresh your memory for free.

TONY: You're a man with a megaphone on a mission....never mind. You can twist it as much as you want but those that have seen through the fog of lies will not buy into your anger any more.

Hun Sen is definitely not saint and, as I have stated elsewhere I dislike Taksin.

but Hun Sen was Red Khmer when he was younger. Most people were forced into it. He escaped to Viet Nam, started a resistance movement and...

Returned to Cambodia to overthrow the Red Khmer.

And in absolutely no way is offering something to Taksin interfering in Thai sovereignty. That is total rubbish. And most readers know that very well.

However Thailand trying to force concessions from Cambodia, and even threatening it wel, that is beyond the shadow of any doubt interference!

When Maggie Thatcher harbored well known war criminal and mass murderer Augusto Pinochet and then forced his release, I dislike that tremendously. It was a disgusting thing to do and spitting in the faces of the victims' families.

But as distasteful as that act was, in no way was Mrs. Thatcher interfering in the internal affairs of Chile.

    @Tony (#8)

Instead of just lunging at the keyboard to label others as liars and propagandists with suggestions that they're on someone's payroll, how about you provide some evidence for the wild claims that you repeatedly churn out here?

Oh - and I'm talking about REAL evidence....... not just stuff that you've pulled from websites that also include stories about alien abduction and sightings of Elvis. How is Elvis, by the way?

Honor? Try "saving face." Not impact the US-ASEAN meeting? Now, how likely is that? According to the article, the Japan-Mekong summit got second billing. It's all about the Thai political freak show going on outside of the Big Top.

Think I'll run out for some popcorn and cotton candy. This circus has three rings of fun and amusement for the whole family. And what happened to Sideshow Suthep? How come Mark has to be the barker for the freak show?

At least it's not as passe as the bearded ladies and elephants on Sukhumvit.

As Mr. Abhisit mentioned, "The foreign policy must show mutual sincerity and respect."

However, Mr. Abhisit's action by recalling Thai Ambassador back cast the first stone thrown at Mr. Hun Sen. A true Respect and Sincerity need more patient and compassion in addition to Ahinsa to ease the tension, NOT Emotional reaction demonstrated by Mr. Abhisit.

Still, it's not too late to put the right foot on the path of a true Mutual Respect and Sincerity, and not to throw any more fuel into the situation.

To Ray. You should learn about democracy first,
The PM is elected By the MPs which are elected by
the people and represent them to choose the PM.
very simple to understand, why you don't catch it.
To economist. Your memory seems to be disrupted,
as when the PAD activities took place, Abhisit
    was not Prime Minister yet.
