Suspected separatist militants opened fire at a group of villagers in Yala province on Sunday, resulting in one dead and another severely injured.
Police in Yala's Bannang Sata district said a group of five hunters were attacked by unidentified gunmen while they were travelling in a forest on motorcycles.
Police blamed the southern insurgents.
More than 3,600 people have died in the violence-plagued South since early 2004.
