Thaksin to sue Timesonline

Ousted prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra plans to sue the online version of The Times for defamation over its report of an interview he gave to a reporter from the paper in which is is quoted as making controversial references about the monarchy, Suchart Lainamngern, deputy spokesman of the opposition Puea Thai Party, said on Tuesday afternoon.

“Thaksin has assigned his lawyer, Noppadon Pattama, to study ways to take legal action against the foreign online website for false reporting,” Mr Suchart said.

He insisted that Thaksin has never insulted or made offensive comments about the monarchy.

According to Mr Suchart, Thaksin believed the Democrats were trying to destroy him by accusing him of disloyalty to the high institution to provoke nationalistic sentiment among Thai people. The attempt was aimed at covering the government’s failure to resolve the economic problems of the country.

The deputy spokesman said Thaksin had accepted the job as an economic advisor to Cambodian government only to help end poverty in the neighbouring country.

I actually were reading the news article just right before Times changed to the new headline. The original headline was somewhat offensive then later Times changed the headline to "Taksin called for reform."
I think Times realized that the first headline was offensive and changed once Thai Report start reporting it. I do hope that someone has captured the page that showing the original headline so people has better understanding why Taksin is sueing Times.
Everything else is blown out of proportion by Thai Media especially by Manager Media.

Toxin has no idea of the can of worms he is trying to open.

Defamation is an abbreviation for the legal term 'defamation of character', and he is going to air his dirty laundry, all of it, like it or not, in a real court of law, not a Thai court and represented by grossly out-classed Thai lawyers. What a joke?

First shot the defense will fire is: 'fugitive convicted criminal'. Second: 'an undesirable alien' in the UK, that would just be openers. Can't wait for this one to eventuate.

Second clown in this circus would be Noppadon.

    "Let the games begin."

Great IDEA # 6: Your conclusion is not so great.

If the interview as in English we know that Taksin's command of the language is poor.

The problem is nothing is clear when it comes to lese majeste laws because the actually speech will never be made available for the people to decide and what constitutes les majeste is decided behind closed doors.

I am 100% certain Taksin is smart enough never to have risked saying something that could come back to haunt him. There is no doubt about that. Taksin is no revolutionary and knows beyond the shadow of a doubt any anti-royalist remark would have lost him almost all of his supporters.

Thaksin should be Thankful that Bangkok Post and other Thai media doing him favour - keep reporting about Thaksin - on their front page.

Nice one Discussion 8 ... not to mention that the entire world is still in an economic depression - so unless Abhisit and his government is supposed to fix the countries it exports to, I'm not really sure what "Dr." Thaksin is talking about.

It must be nice though to have so many suckers following him that have no idea that his "economic expertise" involved him riding on a wave of global prosperity - and still managing somehow to fall short! Speaks volumes of the short comings of letting these people "pick" their leaders.

" The attempt was aimed at covering the government’s failure to resolve the economic problems of the country."

If the opposition let the government do some useful work instead of filing complaints and lawsuits all the time maybe this country would be getting somewhere...

How about the opposition working for the best of Thailand instead of putting all their energy at filing lawsuits and complaints all the time..

  • Bring it on

"Thaksin Shinawatra plans to sue the online version of The Times"

    and

“Thaksin has assigned his lawyer, Noppadon Pattama, to study ways to take legal action against the foreign online website for false reporting,” Mr Suchart said.

So which is it? Are they going to sue the Times or study ways to sue them? You either sue them or you don't. If you don't, you're just blowing hot air.

I think most people readers would appreciate Thaksin bringing a defamation suit against the Times. It would make for a very interesting trial and would open Thaksin up to some intense questioning in an civil court outside of Thailand, something he has never been subject to before. The interview took place in Dubai and the Times is a British company, so his lawyers cannot fall back on their often used ploy of suing in Thailand, where defamation is a criminal offense, to silence critics.

If I were the Times, to Thaksin and Noppadon I would say, "Bring it On".

  • Great Idea

    Great idea AJW.

In case you haven't seen it The Times Online have published a new article on the matter today which says

"Mr Thaksin issued a statement saying that The Times’s report was “distorted” and “untrue”. The text of the interview, posted on Times Online, matches the recording of the conversation and was transcribed by a press representative of Mr Thaksin."

Seems pretty clear cut that Thaksin is being economical with the truth as usual.
