Thailand to revise links with Cambodia

Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva said he has assigned the Foreign Ministry to revise Thailand's cooperation with Cambodia following Phnom Penh's official refusal of request to extradite former premier Thaksin Shinawatra back to Thailand.

He said he was sorry Cambodia had decided not abide by international agreements and law, but Thailand would still not use force against its neighbour.

The border would also not be the closed, but the government would adopt tougher measures to prevent Thais crossing the border to gamble in Cambodia.

The government would try to make sure that people living along the Thai-Cambodian border were not affected, he said.

On Tuesday, the cabinet agreed to revoke a memorandum of understanding on the overlapping maritime boundary with Cambodia in the eastern Gulf of Thailand, but it will not take effect until it is approved by parliament.

i guess there is something seriously wrong with abhisit.

"He said he was sorry Cambodia had decided not abide by international agreements and law..."

did abhisit simply imply that MOU 2001 with cambodia is (was) not governed by the international law? is(was) it not an international agreement? the latter suggestion may stand as thailand plainly canceled it unilaterally!!!

"...but Thailand would still not use force against its neighbour..."

did abhisit mean using force may be a way to response to hun sen's refusal to extradite thaksin back to thailand but just thailand being a good modern and civilised state has not decided to resort to using force as YET ? no comments :(

The requirement for Parliamentary approval may provide a chance to review more deeply the hasty decision to revoke the MOU with Cambodia over the Gulf of Thailand border area and come up with a more credible policy.

"...but Thailand would still not use force against its neighbour."

Despite all of the silly responses generated by Abhisit & Co. to this latest Thaksin-related 'crisis,' the need to make this kind of denial is totally out of the blue.

Is this the hidden storyline amongst those who prop up this government? Is it a preview of the calls we'll hear from the PAD this weekend?

If so, then the government must invoke the ISA and break up the PAD rally, then dissolve the House. To lead a country into war, because of a perceived insult, is the height of medieval arrogance.

Those who hold such views have neither the right nor the ability to govern a modern nation.

The more you push, the more difficult it is to get out with grace. You have been pushing too far already. Try to find ways out now. In politics we must not close the door. Leave some room for compromise, otherwise it's difficult to save your face.

PM Abhisit, your govt tore up the MOU with Cambodia and now you said you were sorry that Cambodia had decided not abide by international agreements and law? I think your 1 finger pointing to Cambodia while other 4 back to you.

And it is wise that force is not to be used because the winning chance is slim.

I think that it is good for Cambodia if Thailand stop any cooperation. It really have some effect at the early time, but it is good at the longer time.
