Bryan Robson's first competitive match as coach of Thailand ended in a 3-1 victory over Singapore in a Group E Asian Cup qualifier on Saturday.

Winger Suksomkit Suttee gave the former England and Manchester United captain's side the lead from the penalty spot in the 12th minute after a handball in the area.

Substitute Therdsak Chaiman volleyed home the second, against the run of play, with 14 minutes to go and Suksomkit added a third with a right foot finish five minutes later.

Mustafic Fahrudin scored a late consolation from the penalty spot for the hosts.

The result, Thailand's first win and goals in the group, put them top with five points from three matches, one ahead of Iran who were to play bottom side Jordan later on Saturday (at 9:30 pm Thailand time). Singapore slip to third on three.

The top two sides from the group qualify for the 2011 finals in Qatar. (Agencies)
