THAI loses B4.03bn in Q3

  • Online news:

Thai Airways International (THAI) posted a 4.03-billion-baht net loss in the third quarter due largely to foreign currency losses and lower yields.

The loss in the July-September quarter, at 2.37 baht per share, was larger than analysts expected and was in contrast with the same period last year, when it made 425 million baht net profit.

But this year's third-quarter loss was less than the preceding quarter's shortfall, of 5.4 billion baht.

The third-quarter loss was higher than the average 3.44-billion-baht loss forecast by five analysts surveyed by Reuters.

Analysts suggested fourth-quarter earnings may be poor as THAI faces fiercer competition and more expensive jet fuel, even though passengers should improve due to seasonal travel demand.

For the first nine months of this year, THAI's net loss was 1.57 billion baht (0.92 baht a share), improving from 6.61-billion-baht (3.89 baht a share) losses in the same period last year.

THAI president Piyasvasti Amranand said recently the airline was unsure if it would return to profitability this year, but he was optimistic the airline would show a net profit next year.

Like other global airlines, THAI's passenger business has been slowly recovering from a slump caused by recession.

But the entire industry is still running at a loss and the International Air Transport Association (IATA) has forecast losses of US$11 billion for the industry in 2009 and $3.8 billion in 2010.

THAI is undergoing a rehabilitation after posting a net loss of 21.4 billion baht in 2008.

THAI shares closed yesterday on the SET at 19.50 baht, down 20 satang, in trade worth 106.8 million baht.

I like Thai Airways and the service is rather good. However I have stop using them mostly because from Bangkok they are consistently the most expensive. They really need to do something about their fares. Secondly, many of their planes are old. Sorry but it is no longer acceptable to show everyone in the cabin the same (stupid) movie.

Its due to pure and simple miss management, ancient air planes, ( a 747 from 1976 to Phuket ) and the worst service and on time departure in Thailand . They serve a sandwich on a one hour flight they don't try to sell goodies and the staff are demoralized they give a flower on international trips ( what a waste of money ) and they are just badly run .
Ten flight in the last six months and NOT ONE on time, NOT one message to voice the delay, and not one apology for the delays, not one reason give and one was 2 hrs at the gate !!

CLOSE IT DOWN and do us all a favor it is a waste of money . They live on their old reputation that sadly is no longer valid.

I actually did not go on a business trip as Thai Airways was the only flight I could get .

Scary to say the least is the only way I would describe them, they are not even maintaining the inside that's for sure, lights don't work trays broken and seats worn out,and dont go to the toilet you cant see when you shut the door as the lights are so dim, so how safe is the rest of the plane ?

The entire board of Thai should be fired...oil has dropped massively..yet these HiSo buffoons blame the FX ..bottom line Thai airways are way off with idiotic flight fares; pretty obvious that the board of Thai never have to pay for flights

Passenger numbers are off because so many now avoid Thai airways...just not worth the cost, or to put up with their attitude a typical Thailand problem...YES you do need foreigners
