The Democrat Party will ask the cabinet to consider enforcing the Internal Security Act in Chiang Mai when Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva will visit the northern province next weekend.
Democrat spokesman Buranat Samutharak said on Sunday that the ruling party of the government was concerned that the red-shirt rallies could turn violent.
Earlier, a community radio station of the anti-government United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) made a joke that the red-shirts may have a plan to assassinate Mr Abhisit during his visit to Chiang Mai on Nov 29.
Mr Buranat said there should be preventive measures against potential attacks on the prime minister, confrontations between demonstrators and security officers, certain media's move to urge people to gather in rallies and provoke violence, and activities aimed at creating fear and unrest.
The Democrat wanted the Internal Security Act imposed in Bangkok and Chiang Mai urgently so the situation could be controlled, he said.
