PM: Police board not yet in harmony

Members of the board of the Royal Thai Police still cannot agree who should be the new national police chief and the appointment may be delayed until next year, Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva admitted on Friday.

The position has been vacant since September, with Mr Abhisit's personal choice Pol Gen Prateep Tanprasert at the helm in an acting capacity.

Mr Abhisit said the appointment might be delayed until next year because "differences of opinion still exist".

The prime minister said the appointment of Supa Piyajitti, director of the Office of the State Enterprises Policy Committee, as a member of the police board for budgetary affairs was suitable. Ms Supa was a capable and straightforward person, he added.

The police board approved Ms Supa's appointment on Thursday. She replaces a board member who resigned.

It's an important position and needs to be filled. Too much to hope the PM might therefore consider reviewing his insistence on his candidate? Nope - too much loss of face for him........ so he'll just keep postponing the decision that we were told "had to be made by 30 September" - until he switched and said it didn't matter.

Perhaps he thinks that if he postpones it long enough, older board members will be gone and replaced. Forget it, Khun Abhisit - you'll be gone and replaced before they are.
