Call for speedy charter amendment

The Chartthai Pattana Party, a coalition partner, has called on the government to be serious about charter change and speed up the constitutional amendment process.

“The government must make it clear just how long it will take to complete the charter alteration process,” party spokesman Watchara Kannika said on Friday.

Mr Watchara said charter amendment drafting process had been completed and the next step was just to seek approval from the cabinet on the holding of a referendum.

"Chartthai Pattana will stick to the referendum outcome and will accept the people’s decision without any conditions,” the spokesman said.

Chavarat Charnvirakul, interior minister and leader of the Bhumjaithai Party, reaffirmed that his party wants six points in the 2007 constitution amended, as recommended by the parliamentary Committee for Reconciliation, Political Reform and Constitutional Amendment.

Bhumjaithai also wants a public referendum on the charter changes, he said.

Why not throw out 2007 constitution, then replace with 1997 constitution, then make changes whatever it is needed to be change..that's pure and simple! Seem like majority people wanted 97' constitution back anywhere...

Kenneth, this government is most certainly elected. And the democratically elected MP's picked Abhisit to be PM.

It's not the Democrat Party's fault that there is no legitimate opposition party to run against them. PPP was shamelessly and openly running on behalf of Thaksin AND vote buying - something their shamelessly illegitimate successor PTP is STILL doing.

You can't have an election if people don't understand how the system even works, nor can you have an election with no legitimate candidates.

I agree with Canada! Since the Puea Thai coalition refuses to have any amendment process, how can they proceed? They (like me) want the 97 charter re-instated, and they will accept nothing else. Of course, this throws a monkey wrench into the works, since that would negate this government completely, which would be the best idea yet!

Let's face it. Thaksin does not want the charter amendments so they will not happen.

This article reminded me again about how much they bandy about the 'Party" monicker.

Here they reference two 'coalition party' spokespersons. I do not perceive of any ideological underpinning for these so-called 'parties', thereby making a more apt descriptor, being of a 'political group'.

I associate 'party' in a political sense as having a distinctive ideology.

And I can understand why they want a speedy charter amendment process. It had better be speedy, while they stll have their grip on Government. If the Democracy Movement has their way, this wont be for long.

I think charter amendments to have any credibility, ought to be made under the supervision of a representative Government. In other words, under an electoral based Government.....obviously not this one.

I thought this was already dropped? I haven't seen any reports on this for over a month, did someone forget to tell them?
