At least 100 red-shirt members of the Rak Chiang Mai 51 group rallied against Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva in various main roads of the northern city.

Virapol Morakot, deputy secretary general of the Chiang Mai red-shirt group, said even though the premier had called off his Chiang Mai trip, the red-shirt had to rally against him as planned.

“This is to show that the red-shirts do not welcome Mr Abhisit to Chiang Mai”, Mr Virapol said.

He thanked the premier for canceling his trip to Chiang Mai as the decision can help prevent possible unrest from taking place.

Mr Abhisit on Thursday called off his plan to attend the annual meeting of the Thai Chamber of Commerce (TCC) on Sunday as the TCC had withdrawn its invitation.

The red-shirts had threatened via a local community radio station to kill Mr Abhisit in a bomb attack during his visit to Chiang Mai.

#14 Jakrapob didn't turn himself in, and that's after he declared war and stated that he would begin arming UDD with weapons from Cambodia. Then a few months later, Thaksin is in Cambodia with Hun Sen, plotting to overthrow the elected Thai government and radio hosts are "joking" about killing the PM, and hundreds of weapons were being found in raids throughout Chaing Mai.

You can't make this stuff up, and its no coincidence. Reds are now done. Hopefully though, this will give way to a real grassroots movement based on improving education instead of rioting and tearing apart the nation. Improved education won't just benefit the poor, but everyone from North to South.

It's not hard to find 100 red shirts with nothing else to do.I am sure it beats just sitting around.

El Tacko is apparently travelling according to his twitter. Avoiding no doubt countries that might be tempted to extradite him on request.

Re #7. Its not hard to count 100 people, Nor can u confuse 30 with 200000. Remember the saying, lies, lies and damn statistics. And let us not forget the 6 million signature petition that never was. Both sides will exaggerate the numbers because it suits them and their respective cause to do so.

I'm with #16 and I dont think you are being cynical at all. The red shirt brigade have run out of steam, out of ideas, out of support and more importantly out of El Tacko's money. It begs the question that if you had to demonstrate in CM today although Abhisit wasnt here, why wasnt there the same need to continue with the BKK planned rally. He was, after all, in Bangkok. Time to admit it, the games up. And its not a question of winners and losers as the only loser to date is Thailand.

I just get the sense that El Tacko himself is starting to feel the heat.

Perhaps as the first sign of reconciliation we can have a mass ceremonial burning of red AND yellow shirts and move on.

    To Anonnymouse:

As stated I am in Thailand every 6 weeks, in the bad times when this february I sat in a Airbus A340 with less than 50 people in it the same as in the good times like now in a fully booked Boing 747.

The point is that I don't want to support these red shirts that bug me nearly every time I'm in the Land of Smiles. But unfortunately this is what happens. The next annoyment is programmed for december when I'm there again.

I don't care if you think I support the economy in a small way or not. All I can say is that I support the economy by coming there and spending my money, and you can believe that for me this is not that small.

Fact is that a lot of farang supporting Thailand over years with their visits and "small" spendings are disgusted by the situation and don't come back. They go to Vietnam, Bali or somewhere else.

Small is always relative, same as the intellect.

Hey c'mon Guys, we should not mock the afflicted. Cynical thought - if funding drys up how many do we still have demonstrating? 2nd cynical thought - why was the big demonstration in BKK called off, was it funding, or lack of support? By the way, has anyone heard from Takki in the last couple of days? I hope he has not invested in Dubai!!!

Lets keep this in perspective. They got about 100 protesters in the perceived red shirt 'nerve centre'. Wow. I've eaten in a busier restaurant here.

re #10. Why on earth would you want to avoid coming to CM? Your actions are no better than the red shirts than you condemn. For no reason at all you are hurting the local economy in your own small way.

Today I went as normal to the local food market near the US Consulate. Had lunch on the other side of the river, drove around Tapae Gate, shopped at Big C in Hang Dong and went back home. The key two words are AS NORMAL. I'm with #6 only I never even saw any of the red shirt brigade, let alone the mass assembly of government vehicles alluded to by #5.

And talking of #5. You have obviously never seen the President of the USA move around. The Guinness chaps wont be turning for the cents spent on Abhisit. And why shouldnt local children welcome their PM to their home town. Its quite common around the world for this to happen. There is nothing shameful in that. Threatening to kill a PM is shameful (and more).

'We had to demonstrate'. No you didnt. Why not spend quality time with your families.

"The red-shirts had threatened via a local community radio station to kill Mr Abhisit in a bomb attack during his visit to Chiang Mai."
No they didn't. It was a joke thats been twisted in every way possible to make people think they are violent extremists. I'd like to remind you that after the Bangkok riots, *all* redshirt leaders turned themselves in to the police.

Is the PM has showed up you could have called it a parade.

Since the PM did not show up, it is actually called a parade

Both the Red Shirts and PAD have proven that they are Thailand's equivalent of the Borg. :(
