Thai-Cambodia tension eased

The diplomatic dispute between Thailand and Cambodia has been eased after the latter allowed the mum of jailed “Thai spy” to meet her son at Prey Sar prison, Democrat Party spokesman Buranat Samutrak said on Saturday.

Mr Buranat said the political movements by ousted prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra received no responded from the armed forces of the two countries.

He said Cambodian Defence Minister Tea Banh had on Friday clearly said that the legal trial case against the arrested Thai engineer, Sivarak Chutipong, had nothing to do with politics.

Thai and Cambodian defence ministers vow to keep peace. They agree that a recent diplomatic row between two countries will not lead to conflict on border.

The Thai-Cambodia general border committee meeting in Pattaya concluded on Friday that only peaceful means should be used in settling border disputes between the two countries.

Re #3. There is a diplomatic spat as both countries have withdrawn their respective Ambasadors. And expelled First Secretaries.

re #2. Any family member has the right under international consular law to visit a relative in prison in another country. She did not visit her son thanks to the generous grace and favour of the Cambodian Authorities. As a signatory to the relevant Consular Convention they have a duty to allow access. There mith even be a bilateral Convention between the two countries.

There is no diplomatic dispute between Thailand and Cambodia.

It is the Democrat Party playing politics, trying to create an external enemy, and using the media to do some fear-mongering.

Hoping thereby to besmirch the name of their electoral nemesis Mr. Thaksin.

Elections will put them out of their misery.

To allow a mother to see/meet her son on a spy charge is a legal right of a mother based on the Cambodia consideration which is a positive approach. The existence of the tension does not improve much, unless the current Thai administration reciprocates a positive approach to REALLY EASE the tension.

Khun Buranat is only a day late in his attempt to claim some sort of victory for the government. Gen. Prawit's discussions with his Cambodian counterpart were already well-publicized. Buranat is also a bit confused, attempting to portray the military as a tool of the civilian government. Many in Thai society hold the reverse to be true.

More shameless pandering on a slow-news Saturday.
