PM: Govt to discuss dong, Dubai debt

The economic ministers will meet on Monday to discuss the debt crisis in Dubai and the devaluation on Vietnam's dong currency, Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva said in his weekly broadcast on Sunday.

Mr Abhisit said he believed their impacts on the Thai economy would be minimal.

He said the government will continue monitoring the global economic situation closely, and the Council of Economic Ministers will discuss the details of the Dubai World's debt and dong's devaluation on Monday.

Vietnam last week devalued its currency by around five per cent against the US dollar while also increasing interest rates to dampen rising inflation. At the same time, troubled investment company Dubai World announced its plan to seek rescheduling of payments of US$59 billion in debts.

On the political front, the prime minister said the situation had considerably eased. He called on all sides to maintain peace and order as His Majesty the King's 82nd birthday on Dec 5 is nearing.

He also called on the opposition to explain why it did not join the government in amending the constitution. He asked the opposition whether its intention to amend the charter was for the interest of the country or certain people.

"I am ready to dissolve the parliament once there is no unrest in the country," he said.

The premier said he did not wear a bullet-proof vest while on duty.

Why do they need to discuss something which Korn says is not a problem? How many other things which are not problematic will they be discussing? Presumably an infinite number of non-problems.

When you said the amendment of the charter should not be for the interest of certain people, you are actually saying that the 2007 charters were designed to get rid of certain people and for the interest of those who want to get rid of certain people.

Jill: a 1 million person rally, hahahahaha
I think they could not mobilize 20.000 so they called it off.

"The premier said he did not wear a bullet-proof vest while on duty".

The above quote from the article attributed to Khun Abhist is another tactical security measure that should be kept private, especially after the BP just finished a series of articles about assassination threats against Khun Abhist.

It's impossible to keep any Head of State perfectly secure from assassination, but the people resposible for his security must cringe when he gives public statements about measures, taken or not taken, to keep him secure. Then to see it in print and posted on the I-net doesn't help make the job easier.

There are strict "lese majeste" laws in Thailand about discussing the Thai Royal Family. Perhaps the lawmakers should consider tightening up what is made public about the Prime Minister's sercurity arrangements and/or threats against the PM's security.

The Political situation has eased considerably according to the PM....and that is without taking any constructive reconciliation actions....wow, things happen by themselves.......Surely this is wishful thinking on a grand scale...he barely managed to avoid a 1-million person rally calling for his ouster, and will face it soon....but the political situation has eased?....Yeah right!

Charter amendments should only occur under the auspices of an electorally based truly representative Govt.

Ready to dissolve Parliament when this and this and this and this ad-infinitum......occurs. Yeah right!
