More than 138,200 people in Mae Hong Son have suffered from severe cold weather. Seven districts have been declared as disaster-hit areas.

The Meteorological Department said temperatures plummeted below 15 degrees overnight (59 F) in the province capital, and lower than that in rural and higher mountain areas.

Disaster Prevention and Mitigation official Thirayuth Chandiswong said cold weather had hit 44 tambons in seven districts of the northernmost province.

The province had requested for a budget of one million baht from the Interior Ministry to purchase more winter apparels for the cold-affected villagers, Mr Thirayuth said.

He said the public and private sectors had also donated winter apparels to the villagers and students there.

Meanwhile, many tourists travelled to the province during this time of the year to experience fresh air and cold weather.

I am not sure if anyone has realised that Chiang mai once had two wet seasons. One in may and one in september. That has not been the case for the last three years as the wet season has started in may and not really stopped until november.

A friend of mine lives near Mai Wang as has been their for 9 years. He has seen his own micro climate change in the last 4 years.

I dont think anyone can suggest that seasonal changes are not occurring. The climate change scientists really do not understand the effects of a changing earth or why it is happening. I suspect to much human population cutting down to many forests to built houses they dont need. Well not the 3 toilets and 5 air conditioners any way.

This has been happening to these people for 1000's of years. Why have they not learned hope to cope with it? What would Darwin have to say?

Having lived in the mountains for 6 years, where there is no
central heat and most people can't afford heaters, I'm pleased to see the government helping to mitigate problems. It's difficult for families to buy extra blankets and warm clothes -- something which isn't an issue in warmer climates. Everyone can join in donating warm clothes; many of us have extras we don't even use. It's a great opportunity to support fellow citizen.

It is 0.65C/100m for average change in temperature with altitude. It has been getting to 12-13C im Mae Hong Son. How this can be classified as an emergency is amusing to someone who lives at 2,500m in Colorado, USA. That is shorts and t-shirt weather for me.

Charlie, look at the home page BKP
it states 14 degree in Chiang Rai, if you are further up in the mountains a rule of thumb is 1 degree less per 100 meter higher elevation.
So at a mountain 1000 M, it comes to the mid single digits.

Meanwhile our fearless world leaders conspire in Coppenhagen about the "obvious" rise in temperatures. I've got to tell you honestly, it seems to be getting colder every year, just from my personal experiences. But then again, I'm not getting paid millions in government grants to say otherwise!

I'm sending some coats to those people!

Do not these people know that every year about this time, that it starts to get colder and to prepare for it. I am sorry, that would take forethought.
