Private sector backs B250 daily wage

The Joint Private Sector Committee on Monday voiced support for Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva's idea to increase the daily minimum wage to 250 baht.

The committee comprises representatives of the Thai Banking Association, Thai Chamber of Commerce and Federation of Thai Industries.

Dusit Nonthanakhon, president of the Thai Chamber of Commerce and chairman of the Joint Private Sector Committee, said the committee agreed at its meeting on Monday to support Mr Abhisit's idea.

In the far north the daily wage is 151 BT. If you are unskilled and want a steady job you better be prepared to accept even less than that. Minimum wage limits are fine as long as the government enforces them.

Same - same everywhere. Employers want to get away with paying as little as possible.

Even at 250 bhat a day Thai workers are still earning about 50% of what independent analysts consider the minimum needed for basic economic survival.

Thai workers are forced to live in groups, sharing houses and condos because they cannot afford to live decent lives otherwise.

A tiny condo for a worker is at least 2,000-3,000 bhat. Transportation and gas and electricity alone eat up most of the what is left over from a 200 bhat a day monthly wage.

In fact the wealthy are as wealthy as they are because their workers are still treated like serfs in a giant fiefdom. And the military stands guard to make sure nobody dare challenge the status quo.

    These inequalities are obscene...

Abhisit will approve it of course. But look at the sad side when he approved 15% pay raise for the MPs so that they could vote for his deficit budget. Not counting the billions of baht pass along to the MPs to spend in their constituents at their discretion. He also promotes more of the corrupt police force instead of reducing them like Mexico where they cut 10% of their corrupt police force.

    Are corruption and cronyism reduced???

Minimum rate nationwide for worker in the US has been over 225 bahts per HOUR ($7.25/hr) for some time ago. And, how many hours a day was defined for worker in Thailand? And, anything you put on or ware on your body is 200 to 300 percents cheaper in the US. I have run out of word to say! Long way to go Abhisit...

250B per day is not exiting for many of us but I am sure it is a big step forward for many ordinary Thais. I hope Abhisit is capable of implementing this and hopefully some supporters from the famous fugitive will finally understand that Abhisit is a decent prime minister who cares about all Thais.
