Malaysian commandos free tanker

Malaysian naval commandos have rescued 23 crew and captured seven Somali pirates following a firefight to free a hijacked oil tanker in the Gulf of Aden, according to reports.

This picture taken on January 21 and released courtesy of the Royal Malaysian Navy shows Somalian pirates being guarded by Malaysian naval commandos following a firefight to free a hijacked oil tanker in the Gulf of Aden. Malaysian naval commandos rescued 23 crew and captured seven pirates.

The commandos were called in after the Malaysian tanker MT Bunga Laurel, sent out a distress call late Thursday after pirates armed with AK-47 assault rifles boarded and took control of the ship.

The Thai navy commanders must be embarrassed at this point...Maybe the "Seals" should join up with the South Korean, French, American, and now Malaysian commandos and get a few pointers...

The commander claimed the shipping company called them off, preferring to pay the ransom, but the commander also said that it was too risky to try a rescue and that if there was any harm to the hostages that "the responsibility would be too great to bear."...So, whose decision was it, really, to turn tail?...

All shipping should be required to provide a "safe room" so that every hijacking can be defeated...This would effectively end the pirating...Also, an automatic death penalty should be enforced on any pirates surviving the commando rescue operation...Problem solved...
