Bannawit: Coup countdown has begun

The countdown to another military coup has begun, former deputy permanent secretary for defence Admiral Bannawit Kengrian said on Tuesday.

Adm Bannawit, chairman of the People's Council of Thailand, said from his long experience in military circles and security affairs he could comfortably say there would definitely be a coup.

He said there were several reasons for the military to stage a coup.

    I will as #4 this.
Do you think that the police could have handled the re situation in Bkk. last year ?
    Remember, police are not civilians.
So, tell us, who should have done what ?

    - "Seeing no way out, the people would look to the military to break the impasse."

Simply misleading. The problems mentioned for justifying the above statement are all a direct result of military intervention in 2006 and the vast majority of people know this.

    - "The situation in this country is no different to that in Egypt."

Again the spin. The situation is very different for 2 main reasons:

    1) The opposition lacks backing from unions and in general in organizational capacity, and;

    2) The military in Egypt has (for the moment) decided to back the people. The Thai military backs the wealthy and powerful.

"But from his experience in taking part in the 2006 coup, and several previous ones..." Don't you just love the nonchalont way this is dropped in to the piece.

The Thai army can help everything by staying out of things that don't relate to defending against foreign military forces engaging in hostile action inside Thai borders and leaving domestic matters totally in the hands of civilians

"they hate politicians and the police, but like the army"
    Me too.
"and army and police don't get along."
Old story that we all know already.

Well, here we go again ! Except this time we can apparently set our watches to three weeks hence. By that time we will have forgotten about it.

    Very sharp article.
Yes also Thailand is like Egypt, they hate politicians and the police, but like the army, and army and police don't get along.
