Songkran road toll down on last year

The Songkran festival began in better spirit this year with only 59 deaths in road accidents during the first two of the "seven dangerous days", a decrease of nearly half on last year, according to Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department.

In 2010, the death toll stood at 114 after the first two days.

For April 11 and 12 this year the number of deaths has fallen sharply and the total number of accidents is also down 37.42% to 893 and injuries down 36.46% to 976, said deputy permanent transport secretary Jamroon Tangkitpaisan.

I feel very good with news like this - and hopefully it is a sign of a truly good new year. I wonder if the reduction is at all related to the decrease in road traffic I am seeing here in the South. Regardless it is good news - but I hope that the government looks into the reasons why - and uses the learnings to save more lives on our roads.

"Chiang Rai has reported the most accidents so far". Likely because their statistics are more reliable. Chiang Rai is known to take road safety more seriously than most other provinces.
