Private sector to stop offering bribes

Twenty-one private organisations have formed a network to fight against the corruption which now plagues the country more seriously than ever before, Dusit Nontanakorn, chairman of the Thai Chamber of Commerce, said on Thursday.

Mr Dusit said business operators have to pay under-the-table kickbacks to people in power amounting to as much as 50 per cent of the cost of a project if they want to win a contract. This compares to the 2 or 3 per cent demanded 20 or 30 years ago.

Giving and taking bribes is tantamount to plundering the nation, because every baht from the state's coffers should be spent for the country's development, he said.

Just to add a thought: Might it not be a better and maybe even easier approach to solve this very ancient problem, by vigorosly prosecuting the "entities" accepting or even asking for a "bribe"?

Are businesses paying up to 50% of project costs as bribes to the current government? Am I reading this right?

This is what Coup's are all about.

looks like the private sector is telling the people that the Coup of 2006, to stop corruption in Thailand, hasn't worked out to well.
Instead of stopping corruption, the government in power now has retaken control of it. And maintaining control of it is quite expensive with so many generals to feed.

What will be the motivation for business operators to stop offering bribes? Those who offer and accepting bribes could not care less if they have broken the law or is it plundering the nation.

Business operators must begin now by exposing those who already asking under-the-table kickbacks to people in power.

A move in the right direction however very sceptical that it will go beyond the bold statement.
