2nd Army: No troop withdrawals

Col Prawit commented ahead of the International Court of Justice's scheduled announcement at the Peace Palace in The Hague, due to start at 3pm Thailand time.  The ICJ will rule on Cambodia's request that it order Thai troops withdrawn from the disputed area around the ancient temple immediately and unconditionally."No matter what the ICJ's ruling is, troops of Army Region 2 will remain in the area [around Preah Vihear] to protect the land and...

Disc 20#. The Statute of the ICJ applies to all members of the UN. The only way of 'quitting' would be for Thailand to leave the UN. The rulings of the ICJ are legally binding on all UN members. They are also final and cannot be appealed. An application for the revision of a ruling can be made, but only on the basis of new evidence, in which case the application must be made within six months of the new evidence coming to light. Furthermore, no applications for a revision can be made after 10 years has elapsed since the original ruling. The problem is that the ICJ has no direct ability to enforce its rulings. That requires a decision of the Security Council, which is usually reluctant to take action. That apart, UN members formally undertake to abide by the ICJ rulings and not to do is certainly dishonorable, although by no means unknown.

Why does Thailand even belong to all these world organizations? They never do what they are told, they never pay any attention to what other member nations see, and then they usually sull up and take their toys home, they don't want to play anymore, awwwwwwwwwww. If you choose to be a second-world country that always knows better than everyone else--then okay-you won't be too far from third-world and dictatorship. Is the way of the direction one takes.

The Army spokeman must clairfy his statement. The AV caretaker government should act immediately to order the Army to withdraw troops and abide the ICJ rulings.

Most cambodian army men don't want to fight with their ancestor. They got the same DNA with THAILAND. Why should fight for since they have been knowing that it belong to their ancestor.

What is the point of having a court that does not have the physical power to enforce its own rulings?

"The army will wait for instructions from Gen Prayuth Chan-ocha [the national army chief]," the spokesman said."

And the General MUST obey the orders from the government. THAT'S the way it works! Many agree D 1, this is a test of Yingluck's & PT's diplomatic skills. I suggest that they do what AV failed to do & that's negotiate a peaceful resolution, build, sell, host tourists & make $$$. Then those General ordered troops will look silly just hanging around! Maybe Thais could put flowers in their guns [just like after the coup![

Why your delegation flied to Holand? if you don't respect the ruling. It's hard to understand this army general. It means that the head and the tail is not in the same body. : 8 ( so poor!

This is the response most people expected from the Thai military. Nobody is gonna tell them what to do! And certainly no ‘non-Thai’ International Court of Justice for they are the great defenders of the nation (not counting the 10 year civil war in the south and the deluge of drugs throughout the nation). I can’t wait to see how they like taking directives from a woman.
