Two get 3 years each for Santika fire

The Bangkok South Criminal Court on Tuesday sentenced Wisuk Setsawat, a senior executive of Santika pub, and Boonchu Laosenat, an executive of Focus Light Sound System Co, to jail for negligence causing the fire that razed Santika pub in Ekamai Soi 9 in the first minutes of Jan 1, 2009.

Sixty-six people were killed and many others injured by the blaze that tore through the pub as revellers celebrated the New Year.

D14: Why only 5 of the families receiving compo? What about the rest?

"The two men and Focus Light Sound System Co were also ordered to pay a total of 8.7 million baht compensation for relatives of five of those killed."

How many standards does this country have?

One is right to say that we should be 'glad' that a few people, one of which a major shareholder,
were even sentenced at all, being TiT, but what one really thinks.....and really wants to say......and what one really should say about this case ruling....is.....how pathetic!

A friend of mine just got 2 years for buying a stolen laptop. The justice system is totally broken.

Hi, yes so sad. Sadder still, is the continuing 'legal arrangements' in company formations, wherein the real owner -- eats the cream, but goes free in such circumstances: this will happen again, and again. These entertainment zones are required to renew liquor/cigarette licences, but no one checks whether there is a minimum public liability insurance. There is a heavy mark up on the products sold, and public protections are easily affordable. Change the laws, reform the systems -- it does not matter about which party is in power, all these 66 lives have not died in vain. The very reason these reforms do not take place is logic: the top brass in the Ko-Tho-Mo are involved in bigger cakes, constructions contracts, and to do good or reform the law, never appeals to their materialistic minds !

3 year jail for negligence and 66 dead is very little but I think in Thailand it is good to see that someone (relative) influential and rich goes to jail at all. A typical verdict would have been to blame the driver or the maid and I think it is good to see that the owner will (hopefully) go to jail.

What about the Thong Lor police that took nearly half an hour to contact the near by Pra Kanong fire station?

Scapegoats get three 3 years for 66 people dead...and the owner that operated with no permits ? Shame on Thailand! Truth is always a commodity to be bought and sold.

It is utterly pointless ranting about the real culprits remaining unpunished. This is Thailand, where no-one of any status is ever, ever brought to account. Live with it. It's just the way it is, always has been and always will be until the people rise up against such injustices as they have done in the Arab world.
But then, even when that was tried in Thailand last year it ended up achieving absolutely nothing. The government stayed in power until IT decided to hold an election, and dozens of people were killed and hundreds injured - for what?
