Bridges, expressways 'quake risks'

Engineers have called for an inspection of all bridges and expressways in Bangkok, warning that the structures were not designed to withstand earthquakes.

“There is a chance that beams could fall from supporting posts,” said Amon Phiman, chief of the sub-panel on structural engineering and bridges at the Engineering Institute of Thailand.

This did not mean bridges and expressways were not strongly built, but “we have no clear standards” for  withstanding earthquakes, he said.

The real news here is that someone admits that something is wrong. Nobody actualle believed that these constructions have been built according to safety standards. A combination of 'no clear standards', cutting corners out of convenience and simple graft is likely to cause 'some' problems in case of an earthquake.

"An earthquake itself causes only 50 percent of the deaths. The other per cent usually people crushed by falling building materials,” Mr Amon said at a seminar this morning.

So let me understand this: The 50% deaths caused from the earthquake itself were shaken to death?
