Hu calls for Taiwan reunification

BEIJING: China's President Hu Jintao on Sunday called for Taiwan and the Chinese mainland to reunite, as he marked the 100th anniversary of the revolution that ended the nation's long imperial history.

Speaking at a ceremony attended by top Communist Party leaders -- including former President Jiang Zemin, who made his first public appearance since rumours emerged that he had died -- Hu also ruled out Taiwanese independence."Achieving reunification through peaceful means is what most suits Chinese people's fundamental interests, including Taiwan compatriots," he said."We must strengthen our opposition to Taiwanese independence... and promote close exchanges and cooperation between compatriots on both sides."The ceremony at the Great Hall of the People marked the 100th anniversary of the Xinhai Revolution, which overthrew the Qing dynasty, bringing more than 2,000 years of nearly unbroken imperial history to an abrupt end.The Republic of China then emerged, but it only lasted until 1949 on the mainland. That year, the Communists took power and the remnants of the republic moved to Taiwan, which still calls itself the Republic of China although Beijing claims sovereignty over the self-ruled island."Working together to promote the peaceful development of...

loopholes (D1): Taiwan "belongs" to China... hmm... 5,000 years of history?

Please check YOUR history: Taiwan (the island of Formosa) NEVER was under the rule of the Chinese communists. It's like saying Malaysia & Cambodia 'belong' to Thailand (because of the Kingdom of Ayutthaya)!!!

Taiwan is a small, organized economic powerhouse with freedom of religion. Why mess up a good thing?

Hong Kong people never had their own government (only have British rule before 1997). On the other hand, Taiwan was never under control of communist party, which is the only party in China.

Most important, you can't force it if Taiwanese don't think they belong to PRC, It's the people that matters, beside they are well off and doing much better without China, I support Taiwan it is a good independent country! Go Taiwan! Long Live Taiwan

Taiwan is Taiwan and China is China, period.

Taiwan ROC, you belonged to the mainland China, that's a fact from 5,000 years history and will continue to be in the years to come ! So why not embrace your motherland instead of being separated
