UN expert: Amend lese majeste law

A United Nations rapporteur has recommended that Thailand amend provisions of Criminal Code and the Computer Crimes Act relating to lese majeste.

The UN Special Rapporteur on the right to freedom of opinion and expression, Frank La Rue, said the  government should to amend Section 112 of the Criminal Code and the 2007 Computer Crimes Act, saying that the laws were too vague and harsh criminal sanctions were unnecessarily used against the universal norms."I urge Thailand to hold broad-based public consultations to amend the laws so that they are in conformity with the country's international human rights obligations," Mr La Rue said in a statement issued from Geneva today.Article 112 stipulates that "whoever defames, insults or threatens the King, the Queen, the heir to the throne or the regent shall be punished with imprisonment of three to 15 years"."The recent spike in lese majeste cases pursued...
