Japanese experts: Thai flood not to be feared

Two Japanese experts from Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) who have been in Thailand for a week now to observe the flood situation tell TPBS viewers that people should not fear the flood threatening Bangkok because its nature is innundation, not a flash flood like in Japan.

People have time to walk around and move about as the flood will rise slowly over days due to the little slope and wide areas that the floodwater in the fields have to travel.

The exception is when the flood is prevented to run its course by levee, raising the water level higher and higher. When the levee is breached, the mad rush of floodwater can be dangerous.

Some news media are exagerrating the flooding situation so as to make it news-worthy or even politically instigated so as to discredit the government's capability to handle the flood crisis.

Why has the flow of news stopped? Nation has nothing since 6.00 pm & BKK post no worthwhile stories after. Has the river bursts it's banks? How far has the flooding moved south from Don Maeng/Laksi? Have the gates been opened into San Saen? Are we going to have a flood in Minburi/Nong Chok/Lat Krabang? NOTHING!!!

They're absolutely correct. Thais are out of control with panic in this situation, but NOT the man-on-the-street Thais I meet. They're just taking it a day at a time. It's the government and these so-called 'officials' who keep releasing shock statement after shock statement, panicking people, yet with no actual evidence to back up anything they say.

What's dangerous is wading through murky, putrid, toxic, sewage water with sharp objects on the ground and animals (dead or alive) floating by, not to mention downed power lines.

I am sure the spirits of the 352 who has died will feel better. I am sure the experts mean well but maybe now is the time to be quiet and let a single Thai spokesperson talk.
