Villagers protest over floodgate

A large number of residents in Bangkok's Khlong Sam Wa district staged another protest today, demanding the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) lift a floodgate higher to more rapidly drain water into Khlong Saen Saep.

They want the gate raised from 80cm to 150cm, as they they say was agreed on last night.

The villagers and BMA workers were not able to settle their dispute.  The BMA officials agreed to open  the gate only by another 5cm. They said if the gate is opened wider people in other areas would be affected.

Please have a look at a map (unfortunately not part of this article). Khlong Saen Saep goes very much through what we can describe the centre of Bangkok (at least one of the centres). If this channel will be opened and overflows then we can be sure that we will have “Bangkok city is flooded” news all over the world – plus obviously (major) problems for the millions of people living and working along that channel.

D1 - As long as it is not yours the one with the flood, right?

Unfortunately this does not help the image of Bangkok with the rest of the coutnry, where it is clear for all that all others can suffer at the expense of keeping Bangkok dry despite being a massive obstacle for the natural flow of water.

Oh well, its just "villagers" as the "journalist" just pointed out to all.

Hang tough BMA. You're doing a GREAT savings the city against long odds.

The actions of these thoughtless people destroying dykes have now polluted the tapwater of everyone in Bangkok for the second time. Apparently, 11 million people aren't important enough for the authorities to protect or drinking water.

Army should be sent in to control gansters. gates are built to stop water, not allow it to flow through.

Why build a gate if you don't want to close it? Go ask 7-11, who say they never close, yet border to install doors.

"Police could only look on to maintain law and order."

So standing there, and doing nothing, is "maintaining law and order" ????????

Although one can understand the frustration of these people, what good would it do to flood yet another community and have double the people cope with 50-60cm of floodwater. Better to leave it in one area for now.

Being flooded is hard. What difference does it make if it's 50 cm or 1 meter? Not that much if you look at it from the outside.
