The National Blood Centre says there's a grave shortage of blood supplies, especially for patients suffering from blood disease, because the floods have forced regular donors to leave Bangkok.
The centre is struggling to cope with a sharp drop in blood donations, down from an average 1,500 units a day to only about 700 units since the high tides raised the flood level in Bangkok this weekend, the blood centre director, Soisa-ang Pikulsod, said on Tuesday.
Since each unit donated was 350-400cc of blood, the amount was hardly adequate to supply patients suffering from blood diseases such as thalassaemia and leukemia.
