Defence: B12bn for flood repairs

The Defence Ministry will ask for a 12.2 billion baht special budget to repair military bases and equipment damaged by the great flood, defence permanent secretary Gen Satian Permtongin said on Wednesday.

Of the proposed budget, 10.5 billion baht would be earmarked for the air force, 1.2 billion baht for the army, 312 million baht for the navy, and 139 million baht for the Royal Thai Armed Forces Headquarters, Gen Satian said.

Gen Satian was speaking after a meeting of the Executive Committee of the Centre for Defence Ministry  Operations Support called to discuss plans for post flood relief efforts in 27 affected provinces and to establish funding for restoring military bases and  military equipment damaged by the flood water.

10.5 billion to repair what? roads? I fail to see how 10.5 billion is needed unless its to buy new fighter jets or pad their pockets again. Also 1.2 billion for the army? for what? I know there were some army trucks that sustain water damage, but they don't cost billions to fix - might as well buy a whole new fleet!

Seems to be a resonable request if the money is actully spent to repair infastructure and equipment damaged by the floods.

However, as a concession we should eliminate the ISOC ( -8 billion per year), no more advanced jet fighters, aircraft carriers, blimps, or submarines, shed all of the inactive general/flag officer positions, and take the annual military budgets back to the pre coup levels.

D1=D3: said it all. I simply wish to add: using the last money, to fill your stomach is cerainly wiser, than using said funds, to repair your fridge.

Listen to D1-D3: '12.2 billion baht special budget to repair military bases and ...' millions of people suffering terribly out there. Might be a slightly better idea, helping them out of the mud, before trying to 'protect' ...

The Government's first responsibility is to the millions of ordinary Thais who have lost so much from the flooding. This demand from the military is ill-timed and scandalous. Furthermore, the use of EM by the military does nothing to counter their self-centered perspective. The evidence for the effectiveness of EM in improving the quality of flood water is, at the very best, inclusive.

Let's hope that if they get this funding, the money goes right where it's really needed and not into the pockets of some of Thailand's most corrupt leaders, rich elite and/or notorious gangs (oops, I mean businessmen).
