Govt confident of 7% growth

The government is confident Thailand's economic growth for the year 2012 will reach 7 per cent, Deputy Prime Minister Kittiratt Na Ranong said.

Mr Kittiratt said this in a television programme entitled "PM Yingluck Meets the People aired this morning on NBT television station.

Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra, however, did not appear on the show, which instead featured Mr Kittiratt and Virabongsa Ramangkura, chairman of the Strategic Committee for Reconstruction and Future Development (SCRF).

A 7% increase in GDP may well occur as the result of repairs to flood damage and flood prevention projects, but in what sense is this a step forward for the national economy? This may well be nothing more than a further illustration of the idiocy of relying on GDP 'growth' as an index of a long-term increase in prosperity. The 'growth' in these circumstances is nothing more that a reflection of steps to prevent a decline - necessary perhaps, but nothing to celebrate.
