EC asked to investigate Dems

The Election Commission (EC) has been asked to investigate whether the Democrat Party had violated the Political Party Act by taking donations from a government agency, former senator Ruangkrai Leekitwattana said.

Mr Ruangkrai said when the Democrat Party opened a centre to receive public donations for flood victims in November last year the centre received a donation of 500 sets of survival kits from the Energy Ministry.

This might have been in violation the Political Party Act, of which Section 71 prohibits a political party from taking donations from an official agency.

    @Disc 11 - A law is a law.

    Agree, the PTP and DEM should both be banned.

    law is law.
    If Dem broke the law, they deserve to be banned.

    Notice, this complaint wasn't made by a PTP MP or member since it's such a petty complaint as to backfire. Imagine the public opinion of using a well meaning flood relief initiative to get a party banned. It's unlikely to happen, the donations were made to a centre set up by a party, not to a party coffers themselves. We have this situation where one side lodges a spurious complaint to counter a more serious one lodged against themselves. This twins the ECs considerations and when they eventually rule that the serious one is a violation, while letting the other side off the hook, the simpl-minded among the public view it as double standards. The biased EC in 2006 tried to engineer Thaksin's bogus election and were eventually convicted of malfeasance, tried this trick. In this case some dodgy politician has got this senator (supposedly seen as being neutral) to lay this complaint on their behalf to discredit the opposition. btw: when you're in the opposition one of your key responsibilities is to act as a watchdog (and boy does this govt and any Thai govt need a watchdog) so you can expect the Democrats to be constantly vocal.

    Offensive as defensive. Thaksin had truck loads with his 'sincere wishes from your loving leader blah blah blah' on the side apparently sent only to red villages. How corrupt is that ?

    Mr Ruangkrai will shortly be posting pictures of UDD trucks claiming donation bags were the gift of love from a certain politician.

    Amazing ... all this mudslinging but still it is nowhere near the low level the republicans are at in the US during their primaries..;-)

    It's the law that you need to respect. MPs should know more than normal people. And If MPs do wrong thing, the punishment should be harder than normal people?

    Is Mr Ruangkrai Leekitwattana the guy who attacked PPP/PTP quite frequently? Is he the guy who is know for not taking side?
