The Pheu Thai Party is gearing up for an election to choose a new Bangkok governor, possibly by the end of this year, if MR Sukhumbhand Paribatra steps down early, says deputy party spokesman Jirayu Huangsap.
Mr Jirayu said the party's assessment was that MR Sukhumbhand might resign before completing his four-year term in January next year.
MR Sukhumbhand of the Democrat Party was elected the 15th governor of Bangkok on Jan 11, 2009 by a large margin, winning 45% of the votes cast.
The Pheu Thai Party's Bangkok branch committee has set up five working groups to prepare for the campaign. It plans a meeting on Tuesday of the party's Bangkok MPs, former election candidates in Bangkok, and members of city and district councils to discuss the matter, Mr Jirayu said on Saturday.
Mr Jirayu said the committee's evaluation was that MR Sukhumbhand had devoted most of his attention to fewer than 10 inner districts but paid little attention to 40 others on the outskirts of Bangkok.
Mr Jirayu identified three potential candidates for the governor election under the Pheu Thai banner. They are Prapass Chongsa-nguan, an assistant to the transport minister and former governor of the Metropolitan Rapid Transit Authority; Uthen Chartpinyo, a former offficial of the Flood Relief Operations Command (Froc); and party list MP Yuranan Pamornmontri.
