The Democrat Party says Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra should forbid red-shirt supporters from backing the Nitirat campaign to amend the lese majeste laws, for fear the conflict could escalate.
Atthaporn Polabutr, a deputy spokesman for the Democrats, expressed concern that some members of the red-shirt United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) were mobilising to support the Nitirat cause. There was a risk that the conflict now dividing Thammasat University would escalate into a social crisis beyond the control of the government, he said.
Nitirat, which comprises seven Thammasat law professors, has proposed revising Article 112, the law pertaining to lese majeste charges and punishments, drawing a firestorm of criticism from many people and groups.
