The Justice Ministry is beginning the filing of bail applications for about 60 red-shirt detainees with the special budget of 43.8 million baht provided by the Yingluck Shinawatra government for use as bail bonds.
The first batch of detainees backed by the ministry's Human Rights Protection Department for bail will include 47 people held at the Lak Si Temporary Prison, and those charged with lese majeste offences, senior officials confirmed on Monday.
The department had been working on the bail applications and other rights-related assistance for the prisoners without discrimination, the sources said.
"We are doing this for detainees in deep South cases and the red-shirts.
"On Wednesday the Justice Minister will also chair a meeting between our department and other agencies, such as the insurance committee, the Department of Special Investigation, the Law Society of Thailand and others on providing assistance to businesses affected by the 2010 violence," an official who asked not be named said.
