5 provinces declared drought areas

Five provinces have been declared drought areas because they face a severe shortage of water for consumption and agriculture, Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department chief Wibul Sanguanpong said on Monday.

Mr Wibul said the drought areas cover 1,413 villages in 45 districts of Kamphaeng Phet, Lamphun and Sukhothai province in the North, Loei in the Northeast and Chanthaburi in the East.

Most of the areas are outside irrigation zones in areas which always suffer drought during the hot season.

"Most of the areas are outside irrigation zones in areas which always suffer drought during the hot season."

That's not really a drought, is it.

I would like to know where the 24 large flood pumps at Rangsit Klong 12 disappeared to? These pumps were very strategic in preventing some areas to remain dry during the flooding. Now with no pumps can only fear the worst is yet to come

Those areas are at a much higher elevation than the central plain where all the flooding occured, so I would think it would be more difficult irrigating those areas

"The centres are to work with local administrations to examine and dredge canals and public water resources so that they can retain more water, campaign for economic use of water, and advise farmers to resort to cultivate crops which need little water."

ALL those actions should have been recommended / taken LONG before. This comes late, too late - as is usual. When will national, provincial and local administrations learn to at proactive?!

So we are releasing water from dams which are over full at record rates, but we have drought in provinces not far away. What is wrong with this picture? The mega projects should include some pipelines and interim storage facilities (small dams) to direct the surplus of water where it is really needed instead of just let it run into the sea
