'Natthapong Phothong, 37, the driver of the passenger van and a Thai citizen, had fled the scene.'

Were they wearing seat belts? Even so, I think it's amazing that the driver was not killed or so badly injured that he couldn't leave (except by EMS). I still don't understand how 'people' can be so indifferent after such an accident that they leave people there dead or dying in the road instead of trying to help. I'll never understand how people can be like this!

D4, this is Thailand. Even 800 death from flood don't seem to excite the Govt. and officials in charge. They have very high tolerance for shame.

How did the driver survive this? He must be badly injured in some way. My condolences go out to all the affected families.
We have all seen how bad the drivers are in Thailand. Everyone has had experiences and near misses.
Also the media does not help as the tv shows adverts which promote speeding. The media has a lot to answer for in Thailand. They promote a lot of dangerous and bad practices.
people in thailand do not realise that, what they drive and how they drive can and does kill people. They will try and overtake when there are traffic jams driving into on coming traffic with no concern for their or others safety.

How many times have you seen some broken truck stalled dangerously in the middle of he road or traveling at 10 km/hr while traffic flies past at 100 km/hr .Trains would eliminate the need for these brkoen trucks dragging containers to the ports .

According to several statistics on Internet more than 12,000 people die in traffic accidents in Thailand every year. This means more than 30 people die every day in traffic accidents on Thai streets – every day! So according to that the 8 dead of this accident are only about one quarter of the fatalities for today.
I think in part we can blame the laughable driving tests, the useless police and bad streets. But another big part is the attitude of many Thais. I hear often from people that family members and friends die in traffic accidents, but the same people drive with bad maintained vehicles, don’t wear safety helmets, drive drunk, use mobile phones while driving, and complain about other people bad driving. With that kind of attitude we will have more and more accidents and dead people.

The reality is that NObody cares about these deaths....the politicians, the police...no one!!! The poor people are expendable in their eyes...and nothing is in it for them (politicians, police)...no money, other than stopping the vans and then the driver gives them 200 baht to continue on his way. It's a travesty and disgusting...just another miracle in Thailand.

    How sad!
    But this is so predictable!!

No point commenting. This is Thailand the land of smile. Just live with it. Nothing is going to change even another 100 minivan accidents happen on the road. If they can’t stop corruption they can’t stop minivan accident on the road. You can implement many rules and regulations for road safety but no one will follow. Not even the police.

D4 I'm afraid it's a lot more than 3 vans, it's just that they are not all reported in the papers, unless there is a serious loss of life it's not considered news. Whenever we drive more than 200K we see at least one accident usually involving 3 or 4 vehicles and many times they are these mini buses, it's the crazy way they drive combined with tiredness, drugs and alkahol.
