Village chief slain in Narathiwat

A village headman was killed in a drive-by shooting in Narathiwat's Rangae district on Tuesday evening, Pol Lt Akkapan Buasamlee, duty officer at Rangae police station, said.

Police received the report of the shooting about 6.30pm. They found the dead body of Madawee Mayawka, 48, village chief of Ban Kujing Ruapa, behind the steering wheel of his pickup truck.

Madawee was driving his truck on a rural road in his village after attending a meeting at Rangae district office when a gunman on a pickup truck fired on him with an M16 assault rifle.

Don't normally comment about the troubles in the South, but after a big complaint about Rangers shooting a few innocent locals (mistake or not?), this is more of the norm (every day). Cold blooded assination of someone, & the Thai public hardly notice. Bit like in the West when a train crashes in India with 200 dead, they don't take much notice. Both not big news in the newspapers.
