Thailand to fall behind in rice exports

Thailand might lose its leadership in rice exports to Vietnam very soon because of the government's rice mortgage scheme, Thai Rice Exporters Association president Korbsuk Iamsuree said Friday.

"Vietnam, India and Myanmar are key competitors in the rice market but Vietnam is the strongest competitor as the country is determined to become the world's leading rice exporter," Ms Korbsuk said.

She said Vietnam may surpass Thailand within five years.

When you can't monopolize the supply you can not set the export price wholesalers will pay. This is basic economics, and high school kids know this, yet the fugative in Dubai obviously has other intentions as he has a PHD in business so he has a thorough understanding of these basic economic principles.

PTP's rice mortgage policy is incredibly damaging to the rice industry, and in all is a very bad idea. But to say that it's the sole cause of reduced exports is ignoring all the basic facts. 2010 was a year of record drought, and 2011 was a year of record floods - both causing massive damage to farmland. Also, countries around the world have increased rice exports, forcing the world market price to drop - hurting Thailands price competitiveness. And please don't confuse export mass with export profit.

I strongly support the government rice mortgage scheme. This is to control the activities of the middle men who feed on the sweat of the poor famers. They buy rice from the farmers at a low price and if the government buys the rice at a reasonable price and stockpile them, it's better. If the proceeds from rice-farming continue to be too low, farmers in the contryside will migrate to urban centers and quite farming and this situation willbe worse. If the export declines, it does not mean that the production has declined.

Can't believe my eyes. There is every chance that Vietnam will surpass Thailand this year.

2015 is not far away there is a need to change the employment laws and quickly,That means that the job market will be open to all even farangs. But must be able to do the job, as for being able to speak, read.write Thai now is the time to forget that, as now is the time to speak, read, write english and be very good at it also. Many thai people think they are good at but are not. Many businesses also would much prefer to employ a farang bcause they know what they are doing and are not as corrupt,or work shy. Its a big wake upand shake up time for Thailand now.

Why the need to be number 1 at low price? We can be 2 or 3 and still be number 1 in terms of value at the new price. We have good rice stock and should sell at premier price and benefit our people and not the importers. We can't always think of rice as a commodity which necessitate low price strategy. There are markets that appreciate good quality rice and will pay higher price like in Middle east and Japan. We just need to adjust our marketing strategy.

And so it begins, perhaps a harbinger of Thailand's future. It's time to get the lead out, boys and girls! ASEAN 2015 is going to be a rude awakening.

Lets face it Thailand has priced its self out of the market, not just the rice market but most markets also,This is due to greed, corruption and other aspects also. Never forget a profit is a profit even if a small one as long as the price is right and the quality is good then you will always have customers. The customers always look around for the best deal without scarificeing quality and supply. It shows that maybe bad business practice is going on here. BUt could it also be due to the flooding?
