PT loses Chiang Rai mayoralty

The Pheu Thai Party has suffered its third election defeat in two weeks when its candidate lost to a Bhumjaithai Party rival in Saturday's race for the Chiang Rai mayoral seat.

Outgoing Mayor Somphong Kunwong failed to stay in office when he lost by almost 4,000 votes (11,312 to 15,109) to Wanchai Chongsutnamani, a Chiang Rai mayor for many terms, according to the unofficial result announced by the Election Commission on Sunday.

Another candidate Witthaya Tantiphuwanat, a red shirt leader from Khon Chiang Hai Rak Prachathipatai group, received only 2,394 votes from a turnout of 31,321 voters, 62.25% of those eligible.
