Uncle SMS 'died of liver cancer'

Convicted lese majeste prisoner Ampon Tangnoppakul, or Ah Kong, who also became known as "Uncle SMS", probably died from liver cancer, preliminary autopsy results showed on Wednesday.

The 62 year-old passed away just months into a 20-year prison sentence after being convicted of commenting disparagingly on the monarchy in May 2010 in four SMS messages he steadfastly denied sending.

Ampon Tangnoppakul, 62, who was deemed a "prisoner of conscience" by Amnesty International, was convicted in November and sentenced to 20 years in prison. Prison authorities said he died in the Bangkok Remand Prison hospital on Tuesday morning after being admitted suffering severe stomache pains.
